GAUGE:
12 sc = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
BERET
With larger hook, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in ring.
Place marker for beg of rnd and move marker up as each rnd is completed. Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around - 12 sts at the end of this rnd. Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 18 sts. Rnd 4: *Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 24 sts. Rnd 5: *Sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 30 sts. Rnd 6: *Sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 36 sts. Rnd 7: *Sc in each of next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 42 sts. Rnd 8: *Sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 48 sts. Mark this rnd.
Rep Rnd 17 for 2 in. (5 cm) more above marker.
Fasten off.
BAND
With smaller hook, ch 5. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 4 sc. Row 2: Ch 1, turn; working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 20 in. (51 cm) from beg. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Sew short ends of Band together. Sew one long side of Band around edge of Beret, stretching Band slightly to fit. Weave in ends.
