BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
Sections 2 and 3 of the Ruff begin by picking up sts along the bound-off edge of the previous section. More sts are picked up than were bound off to create the graduated sizes of the sections.
RUFF Section 1 Note: Change to circular needle when sts have been sufficiently increased. With double-pointed needles and A, cast on 50 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Rnd 1 (Set Up - RS): With A, *k1, bring yarn under needle to front, sl 1, take yarn over needle to back (to make a yarn over); rep from * around. Rnd 2: With B, *bring yarn under needle to front, sl 1, take yarn over needle to back (yarn over), k2tog (sl st and yarn over of previous rnd); rep from * around. Rnd 3: With A, *p2tog (sl st and yarn over of previous rnd), leaving yarn in front, sl 1, take yarn over needle to back (yarn over); rep from * around. Rep Rnds 2 and 3 until Section 1 measures about 6 in. (15 cm) from beg. With B, bind off, working each (sl st/yarn over) pair as a single stitch.
Section 2 From RS with circular needle and B, pick up and k 76 sts evenly spaced around bound-off edge of Section 1. Join, place marker for beg of rnd. Rnd 1: With B, rep Rnd 1 of Section 1. Rnd 2: With A, rep Rnd 2 of Section 1. Rnd 3: With B, rep Rnd 3 of Section 1. Rep Rnds 2 and 3 until Section 2 measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm). With A, bind off as for Section 1.
Section 3 From RS with circular needle and A, pick up and k 90 sts evenly spaced around bound-off edge of Section 2. Join, place marker for beg of rnd. Rnds 1-3: Rep Rnds 1-3 of Section 1. Rep Rnds 2 and 3 until Section 3 measures about 9 in. (23 cm). With B, bind off as for Section 1.
FINISHING Weave in ends.
