GAUGE:

9 sc + 8 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Wee Backpack Reviewed by JoAnn Clark on 2013-11-24 ***
The bag itself was very easy to make, but the pattern is *really, really* off. Thanks to previous reviews of this pattern, I bought 3 balls of yarn, so I was ready to add rows to make the bag a reasonable size for a 3 year old boy.

I had to add 14 extra rows to make the bag come close to the size the pattern stated it would be.

With the extra yarn, I also created and attached a little flap for the top of the bag:

Ch 11
Row 1 - Starting at 2nd ch from hook, 10sc, ch 1 and turn (10 sc total)
Row 2 - 2sc in 1st st, then 8sc, then 2sc in last st. Ch1 and turn. (12 sc total)
Row 3 - 2 sc in 1st sc, then 10sc, then 2sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (14 sc total)
Row 4 - 2 sc in 1st sc, then 12sc, then 2sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc total)
Row 5 - 2 sc in 1st sc, then 14 sc, then 2sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (18 sc total)
Row 6 - 2 sc in 1st sc, then 16 sc, then 2sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc total)
Row 7 - sc in each (20 sc total), ch 1 and turn.
Rows 8 - 21 - repeat Row 7.

Sew flap onto bag putting the Row 1 of the flap just above where the drawstrings come out of the top of the back of the bag to make the shoulder straps.

When I added the flap, I used every bit of the 3 balls of yarn, so be a little conservative on the tail lengths.

I also used the Magic Ring method to start the bag to make the hole at the bottom of the bag much smaller than it would've been otherwise using the pattern's method.

The cord was tricky, as the reviews had warned. I got it to work by hooking through the top half of the stitch opposite of the hook until the cord was 48" long.

I also made a quick truck applique using some leftover Cotton Ease from a previous project and attached that to the flap - just adorable!!
