9 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Inc 1 st: Knit next stitch without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st to increase 1 stitch.

Cast on 2 sts.
Inc Row: K to last st, inc 1 st in last st - 3 sts.
Rep Inc Row until you have a total of 15 sts.
Dec Row: K to last 2 sts, k 2 tog - 14 sts.
Rep Dec Row until 7 sts remain.
Continue to inc to 15 sts and dec to 7 sts until piece measures about 60 in. (152.5 cm) from beginning, end by rep Dec Row until 2 sts remain.
K2 sts together. Cut yarn and pull through last loop.

Weave in ends.

Zigzag Scarf Reviewed by Samone Swift on 2012-12-28 ****
I enjoyed knitting this scarf. It was easy enough and interesting enough to keep my attention. Now I just have to decide who to give it to!
