GAUGE:

12 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased. PATTERN STITCH K2, p2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts + 2) Row 1 (RS): K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end. Row 2 (WS): P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

NOTES:

Use a separate ball of yarn for each color. Carry colors not in use across wrong side of work. Pick up new color from under old color to twist yarns and prevent holes.

CARDIGAN
BACK
With smaller needles and A, cast on 38 (38, 42) sts. Beg with a RS row, work 2 rows in K2, p2 Rib.
Change to B and work 3 rows in K2, p2 Rib.
Change to C and work 2 rows in K2, p2 Rib.
Size 2-3 only
Next (Inc) Row (WS): With C, (p2, k2) 4 times, p2, kfb, k1, p2, (k2, p2) 4 times – 39 sts at end of this row.

Next Row (RS): Change to larger needles. With D, k2 (3, 2), place marker, rep Row 1 of Chart #1 across to last 1 (2, 1) sts, place marker, with D, k last 1 (2, 1) sts.
Chart Rows 2-7: Continue in St st (k on RS, p on WS) working sts outside of markers with D, and working Rows 2–7 of Chart #1.
When Chart Row 7 has been completed, change to B and work even in St st until Back measures 12 (13, 14) in. (30.5 (33, 35.5) cm) from beg. Bind off.

LEFT FRONT
With smaller needles and A, cast on 18 (22, 22) sts. Beg with a RS row, work 2 rows in K2, p2 Rib.

SLEEVES (make 2)
With smaller needles and A, cast on 22 (22, 26) sts. Beg with a RS row, work 2 rows in K2, p2 Rib.
Change to B and work 3 rows in K2, p2 Rib.
Change to C and work 3 rows in K2, p2 Rib.
Change to larger needles and B.
Next (Inc) Row (RS): K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 24 (24, 28) sts at end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: Knit.
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 4 rows 6 (8, 8) more times – 36 (40, 44) sts when all incs have been completed. Continue even in St st until piece measures 10 (11 1/2, 12 1/2) in. (25.5 (29, 32) cm) from beg. Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband
From RS, with smaller needles and C, beg at Right Front neck edge, pick up and k50 (50, 54) sts evenly spaced around neck edge.
Row 1 (RS): With C, work in K2, p2 Rib.
Rows 2 and 3: With B, work in K2, p2 Rib.
Row 4: With A, work in K2, p2 Rib.
With A, bind off. Place markers about 6 (6 1/2, 7 1/4) in. (15 (16.5, 18.5) cm) down from shoulders on Front and Back. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew side and Sleeve seams.
Front Edging
From RS, with smaller needles and B, beg at neck edge, pick up and k36 (40, 44) sts evenly spaced along Left Front edge. Without working any rows, bind off all sts.
Rep edging along Right Front.
Button Loops (make 4 (4, 5))
With smaller needles and B, cast on 8 sts. Without working any rows and leaving a long tail for sewing, bind off all sts. Fold button loops in half, and sew, evenly spaced, along Left or Right Front edge. Sew on buttons opposite button loops. Weave in ends.
