GAUGE:
16 single crochet + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
Change color when joining a round. To join and change color, insert hook in first single crochet of round, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook; drop, but do not cut old color. Carry color not in use loosely up inside of piece.

I'm giving the Pirate Pal 5 stars because I LOVE how it turned out, but as a beginner I struggled with the instructions for the arms and legs... so I'll point out what I did in case anyone else has troubles. To start, I ch2 and then worked 5 stitches in the 1st chain. Once I got that far I followed the instructions listed BUT after joining with a slip stitch and ch 1, I TURNED the piece and continued. Hope this helps!
