GAUGE:
14 stitches = 4 in. (10 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
AFGHAN
With A, chain 129. Row 1 (Right Side) Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, chain 1, skip 1 chain, *single crochet in next chain, chain 1, skip 1 chain; repeat
from * across, end with 1 single crochet in each of last 2 chain. Row 2 Chain 1, turn. Single crochet in first single crochet, chain 1, skip next single crochet, *single crochet in next ch-1 space, chain 1, skip next single crochet; repeat from * across, end with single crochet in last chain 1- space, single crochet in last single crochet.
Repeat Row 2 for pattern while AT THE SAME TIME working in color sequence as follows:
*Work 8 rows of A, (2 rows of B and 2 rows of A) 2 times, 8 rows of B, (2 rows of A and 2 rows of B) 2 times; repeat from * 6 times, end with 8 rows of A. Fasten off.
Border
Join B with slip stitch at any corner. Work 3 rounds of single crochet around outside edge of afghan, skipping the thin stripes of A, working 3 single crochet in each corner, every round.
Edging Round 1 With B, chain 3, work 2 double crochet in same space, *skip 2 single crochet, single crochet in next single crochet, skip 2 single crochet, 5 double crochet in next single crochet; repeat from *across, skip 2 single crochet, 1 single crochet in next space, skip 2 single crochet, 2 double crochet in next single crochet, slip stitch in top of beginning chain, skipping more or less stitches to end evenly. Fasten off. Round 2 Join A with single crochet in slip stitch, *chain 3, double crochet 5 stitches together as follows: wrap yarn around hook, insert hook into next double crochet, wrap yarn, draw loop through, wrap yarn and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops left on hook); repeat this step into next double crochet (3 loops on hook); repeat this step into next single crochet and next 2 double crochet (6 loops on hook), wrap yarn and draw through all loops on hook to complete, chain 3, 1 single crochet into next double crochet; repeat from *across; end last repeat, slip stitch to first single crochet. Fasten off.
