Hat And Scarf
Lion Brand® Homespun®
GAUGE: 12 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS for Scarf, k every round for Hat) with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

This is a very cute hat, if you have a head the size of a small tangerine. I had to frog the whole thing. I will make this again, because it does have a really nice look to it, but I will do what another reviewer said--use SIZE 8 and then SIZE 10 needles on the project. That makes a lot more sense--not only would it actually fit an adult head, but the knitting would be easier. Instead, it fit my four-year-old's head.
And to just prove that the amount of stitches is too small, take a look at Lion Brand's Sunrise Hat for children, which I also made with bad result. The children's hat has you casting on 63 stitches on SIZE 10 needles. Then, this adult hat has you casting on 60 stitches on SIZE 6 and then moving to only size 8??? Makes no sense. In short, my children's hat was too big (fit granny) and this adult hat was too small (fit my four-year-old).
