Prayer Shawl

Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®

14 sts + 11 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in hdc. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1 here and throughout), turn, work 3 hdc in ring, ch 1, hdc in ring - 5 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, sk first ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch - 7 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, sk first ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch - 9 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Row 4: Ch 3, turn, sk first ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next 5 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch - 11 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Rep Row 4, increasing 1 hdc at beginning and end of each row until Shawl measures 35 in. (89 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.

Shell Edging
Edging is worked along both side edges, from tip of Shawl to top edge. The Edging sts are worked around the turning chs at the end of every other row; rows ending with an hdc are skipped.
First Shell
Join yarn with sl st in beg ch-4 ring.
Row 1: Working around turning chs at end of every other row along side edge, sl st around next turning ch, ch 3, sk next turning ch, sl st around next turning ch.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 6 hdc in ch-3 sp, sl st in sl st at beg of side edge (where yarn was joined).
Row 3: Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * 2 more times, sl st around next turning ch of Shawl - 11 hdc in first shell.

Row 1:
Ch 3, sk next turning ch on Shawl, sl st in next turning ch.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 6 hdc in next ch-3 sp, sl st in 10th hdc of previous Shell.
Row 3: Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * 2 more times, sl st around next turning ch of Shawl.
Rep Second Shell along side edge ending at top edge.
Fasten off.

Prayer Shawl Reviewed by Norma Platt on 2014-02-11 *****
I just finished the shawl. It took awhile to figure out the beginning loop. Once I had that it was easy sailing. The ruffle was so frustrating to get started, that I finally gave up and improvised with a simpler version. Overall. I really like it.
