GAUGE:

18 sts + 40 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Striped Hoodie Reviewed by paleofishdesigns on 2010-09-13 ***
yarn is really hard to work with. I am making a size 4 for my daughter. and made it 7.5 inches long instead of 6 before diving for arm holes. knit the first front panel and it was still too short for my daughter so I ripped it out and knitted 10 inches before dividing for the arm holes
