Fall Fling Hat

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

19 sts + 17 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in k2, p2 Rib, unstretched. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

w&t (wrap and turn) Slip next st as if to purl, bring yarn between needles to opposite side of work, slip same st back to left hand needle, turn work and bring yarn between needles again (one st wrapped). On next row, work wrapped st by picking up wrap and working together with st on left hand needle.

sk2p Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over—2 sts decreased.

Row 1 (RS): K2, * p2, k2; rep from * to end.
Row 2 (WS): K the k sts, p the p sts as the appear.
Repeat Row 2 for k2, p2 Rib.

Beg at face edge, cast on 46 sts.
Rows 1 and 2: Work Rows 1 and 2 of K2, p2 Rib.
Short Row 3: Work in rib as established to last 3 sts, w&t.
Short Row 4: Work in K2, p2 Rib to last 3 sts, w&t.
Short Row 5: Work in K2, p2 Rib to last 5 sts, w&t.
Short Row 6: Work in K2, p2 Rib to last 5 sts, w&t.
Short Rows 7-19: Continue to work as established, working 2 fewer sts before doing a w&t on each row.
Rows 20 (WS) and 21: Work in K2, p2 Rib to end of row, hiding wraps by knitting them together with their wrapped st.
Work even in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beg at center point.
Dec Row (RS): K1, sk2p, work in K2, p2 Rib to last 4 sts, k3tog, k1.
Rep Dec Row every other row until there are 14 sts.
Next Row (RS): K1, (sk2p) twice, (k3tog) twice, k1 – 6 sts.
Bind off.

Join a doubled strand of yarn with crochet hook and join with slip st at one front corner. Chain 20. Fasten off. Repeat on opposite front corner.
Weave in ends.

Fall Fling Hat Reviewed by Brenna on 2010-02-16 ***
This hat IS easy, but they got the gauge wrong! Tsk Tsk! It should be more like 9sts = 4 inches. They tell you to go with size 15 needles and want you to get 19sts = 4 inches? No no!

I used size 13 needles and this turned out perfectly. If you cast on and it seems too big at first, don't worry. The rib knit pulls in once it comes off the needle.

As for the style, it looks good on the model, but I haven't decided how it looks on me.
