GAUGE:

14 sts + 17 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in sc. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc dec) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTES:

To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with next color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Do not cut old yarn, carry it up the inside of the Hat until no longer needed.

Earflap Hat Reviewed by Monique Mercier on 2012-01-11 **
The pattern guage is off. i only used a j hook and still couldn't get more than 3.5 inches. the extra chain in each row acts like an increase while also lengthening so it becomes huge. I would suggest an H hook and no added chains on each row. I have a good beanie pattern but needed an earflap add on
