GAUGE:

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:

K1, p1 Rib (even number of sts) Round 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Repeat Round 1 for Rib pattern
Grafting Hold 2 needles parallel with WS of work together. Thread a large-eyed blunt needle with yarn end and work as follows:
Insert needle as if to purl into first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into first stitch on back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below. 1) insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle. 2) Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on the needle. 3) Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle, then 4) insert it as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle. Repeat 1-4 until all sts are gone. When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.

Knit Child's Elephant Socks Reviewed by Cathy Beasley on 2011-08-20
I made some changes to this pattern. First I made them tube socks hoping my granddaughter could get a little more wear out of them before she outgrew them. The toe was pointy, so I worked dec and knit of toe shaping to 16 stitches, then worked just the decrease round to 8 stitches, worked last two stitches of needle 1 onto needle 3 to graft. Another thing I did not like was moving markers, so for small size I rearranged stitches before I began the toe decreases. I moved 2 stitches from both needles 1 and 3 and put them on needle 2 (8-16-8. Voila no markers to move. Very cute pattern!
