About 13 (12, 10.5) sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern stitch using size G-6 (4 mm), (H-8 (5 mm), OR I-9 (5.5 mm) ) crochet hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
sp-3 (spike st 3 rows below) Work a single crochet in the st corresponding to the next st, but 3 rows below the working row. sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
NOTES:
To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw yarn through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Carry color not in use along edge of work.
