GAUGE:
17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACK
With A, cast on 43 (47, 51, 55, 59) sts.
Work 5 rows in Seed st. Change to B and work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 10 (11, 12, 14, 16) in. (25.5 (28, 30.5, 35.5, 40.5 cm) from beg. Bind off.
LEFT FRONT
With A, cast on 21 (23, 25, 27, 29) sts. Work 5 rows in Seed st. Change to B and continue in St st until piece measures 8 (9, 10, 12, 14) in. (20.5 (23, 25.5, 30.5, 35.5 cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Shape Neck
Bind off 3 (3, 4, 4, 4) sts at beg of next WS row, purl to end - 18 (20, 21, 23, 25) sts. Knit 1 row.
Bind off 3 (3, 3, 3, 4) sts at beg of next WS row, purl to end - 15 (17, 18, 20, 21) sts. Knit 1 row.
Bind off 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) sts at beg of next WS row, purl to end - 13 (15, 16, 17, 18) sts. Knit 1 row.

RIGHT FRONT

SLEEVE (make 2)
With A, cast on 27 (29, 29, 29, 31) sts. Work 5 rows in Seed st. Change to B and work in St st, increase 1 st at each edge every 4 rows 5 (6, 9, 11, 12) times - 37 (41, 47, 51, 55) sts. Continue in St st until piece measures 6 (7, 8, 10, 11) in. (15 (18, 20.5, 25.5, 28) cm) from beg. Bind off.
FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams. Neckband
From RS with A, pick up and k13 (13, 14, 15, 16) sts evenly spaced along Right Front neck, 15 (15, 17, 19, 21) sts across Back neck, 13 (13, 14, 15, 16) sts along Left Front neck - 41 (41, 45, 49, 53) sts. Work 5 rows in Seed st. Bind off. Buttonband
From RS with A, pick up and k37 (41, 45, 53, 61) sts evenly spaced along Left Front edge (Right Front edge for boys) and neckband. Work 5 rows in Seed st. Bind off. Buttonhole Band
From RS with A, pick up and k37 (41, 45, 53, 61) sts evenly spaced along Right Front edge (Left Front edge for boys) and neckband. Work 2 rows in Seed st. Buttonhole Row: K1, * k2tog, yo, work 6 (7, 8, 10, 12) sts in Seed st; rep from * 3 more times, k2tog, yo, p1, k1. Work 2 more rows in Seed st. Bind off.
Place markers 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2) in. (11.5 (12.5, 14, 15, 16.5) cm) down from shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. Weave in ends.
