GAUGE: 9 sc + 8 1/2 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Ch 48, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; join with sl st in first sc, place marker for beg of rnd.
Rnds 2-13: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Shape Sides
Row 1: Turn, sl st in next st, sc in next 22 sc, sl st in next sc.
Row 2: Turn, sk sl st, sc in next 20 sc, sl st in next sc; leave last sc unworked.
Row 3: Turn, sk sl st, sc in next 18 sc, sl st in next sc; leave last sc unworked.
Row 4: Turn, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 15 sc, sl st in next sc; leave last sc unworked.
Row 5: Turn, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 12 sc, sl st in next sc; leave last sc unworked.
Fasten off.
Working on remaining sts of Rnd 13, join yarn with sl st in next sc.
Next Row (WS): Sc in next 22 sc, sl st in next sc.
Repeat Rows 2-5 to shape other side.
