GAUGE:

16 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Sl next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog.

LEFT FRONT
Cast on 53 (61, 69) sts.
Rows 1 and 3 (WS): Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, (p 1, k 1) to end of row.
Row 4: Sl 1, (p 1, k 1) twice, (p 3, k 5) to last 8 sts, p 3, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Row 5: Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) twice, (k 3, p 5) to last 8 sts, k 3, (p 1, k 1) twice, p 1.
Rep Rows 4-5 until piece measures 5 in. [12.5 cm] from beg, end with a RS row.
Keeping first and last 5 sts in rib as established, work center 43 (51, 59) sts in Rev St st (p on RS, k on WS) for 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a RS row.
Side Shaping
Row 1 (WS):
Sl 1, (k1, p1) twice, purl to end of row.
Row 2 (Dec Row): K 1, ssk, knit to last 5 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Rep Rows 1-2 twice more, end with a RS row. Keeping first 5 sts in rib as established, work until St st section measures 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a RS row.
Rev St st Section
Row 1 (WS):
Sl 1, (k1, p1) twice, knit to last st, p 1.
Row 2 (Dec Row): K 1, p2tog, purl to last 5 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Rep Rows 1-2 until 39 (46, 53) sts remain. Work until Rev St st section measures 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a WS row.
Shape Sleeve
Next Row: Cast on 34 sts, purl to last 5 sts of Left Front, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1 - 73 (80, 87) sts. Work even in Rev St st as established, keeping 5 front edge sts in rib, until sleeve measures 7 (8, 9) in. [18 (20.5, 23) cm], end with a WS row. Place 6 front edge sts on one holder and remaining 67 (74, 81) sts on another holder.

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing all shaping. End with a WS row, placing last 6 sts on holder.

BACK
Next Row: Purl remaining 67 (74, 81) sts from Right Front, cast on 21 (23, 25) sts, k 67 (74, 81) sts of Left front from holder - 155 (171, 187) sts. Work even in Rev St st until sleeves measure 14 (16, 18) in. [35.5 (40.5, 45.5) cm] from cast-on edge, end with a RS row. Bind off 34 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 87 (103, 119) sts.
Shape Side
Inc 1 st each side every 6th row 10 (11, 12) times - 107 (125, 143) sts.
AT THE SAME TIME, continue working in Rev St st for 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm] from sleeve bind-off. Then work in St st for 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a RS row.
Back Vent

Next Row (RS): Sl 1, (p 1, k 1) twice, purl to last 5 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Keeping first and last 5 sts in rib as established, continue in Rev St st for 6 (6 1/2, 7) in. [15 (16.5, 18) cm], end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 2 (3, 0), [k 5, p 3] to last 12 sts, k 5, p 2 (3, 0), (p1, k1) twice, p1.

Working rib as established, rep Inc Row every 6th row 3 (2, 2) more times - 115 (131, 149) sts. Work even as established until ribbed section measures 4 1/2 in. [11.5 cm], end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS): Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) to end.

Flattering Sweater Reviewed by Glenda Prince on 2011-11-16 ****
Well I just started this sweater and I think that the instructions are pretty clear. I've been knitting for more than 30 years and am a Knitting Instructor.
Its a lovely pattern and I may do it again and again because of the simplicity.
For the other reviewer, most knitting patterns are listed exactly the way this is...maybe you should have someone with more experience help you with it.
Thanks
