GAUGE:

20 sts + 40 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Garter st (knit every stitch on every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

Slip first st of every row for neat edge.

BODY
Cast on 96 (104, 112, 128) sts. Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 4½ (5, 5½, 6) in. [11.5 (12.5, 14, 15) cm] from beg, end with a RS row.

Divide for Fronts and Back
Next Row (WS):
K 25 (27, 29, 33) sts and transfer these sts to st holder for Left Front, k 46 (50, 54, 62) sts and transfer these sts to st holder for Back, k remaining 25 (27, 29, 33) sts for Right Front.

Right Front
Continue in Garter st until armhole measures 3 (3, 3½, 4) in. [7.5 (7.5, 9, 10) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.

Next Row (Buttonhole Row): Sl 1, k2, yarn over, k2tog, k across row.
Work even for 9 rows. Repeat Buttonhole Row. Work even until armhole measures 4½ (4½, 5, 5 1/2) in. [11.5 (11.5, 12.5, 14) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.

Neck Shaping
Next Row (RS):
Bind off 13 (16, 17, 19) sts, k to end of row.
Work even for 2 rows. Bind off.

Back
Transfer sts for Back from st holder to needle and join yarn. Work even until Back measures 9½ (10, 11, 12) in. [24 (25.5, 28, 30.5) cm] from beg. Bind off.

Left Front
Transfer sts for Left Front from st holder to needle and join yarn. Work as for Right Front, reversing all shaping and omitting buttonholes.

SLEEVES (make 2)
Cast on 23 (23, 28, 29) sts. Work in Garter st for 4 (4, 6, 6) rows. Inc 1 st each end of next row. Rep last 5 (5, 7, 7) rows 11 (11, 11, 13) times - 47 (47, 52, 57) sts, then work even until Sleeve measures 6 (7, 8, 10) in. [15 (18, 20.5, 25.5) cm] from beg. Bind off.

HOOD
Cast on 75 (80, 85, 90) sts. Work in Garter st until Hood measures 6 (6½, 7, 8) in. [15 (16.5, 18, 20.5) cm] from beg. Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew sleeve seams. Fold Hood in half and sew bound-off edge to form back of Hood. Sew Hood to neck edge. Weave in ends. Sew buttons to Left Front, opposite buttonholes.

Baby Hoodie Reviewed by noelle fletcher on 2013-08-06 **
This was a disaster - far too small for a two year old ( she has just turned two) Sleeves too short, body too short and too tight despite the tension check prior to knitting.
My suggestion is to measure carefully your child and make to measure - don't trust the pattern - which is an OK stye, it is just the sizing.
