GAUGE: 20 sts and 24 rows to 4 in [10 cm] in St st using size 8 needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Striped color patt (multiple of 3 sts plus 2 extra):
Row 1 (RS) K2 B *kl A, k2 B; rep from *.
Row 2 (WS) P2 B, *pl A, p2 B; rep from *.
Rows 3-4 With A, k 1 row, then p 1 row.
Row 5 With C, *kl, sl 1 yarn in back; rep from *, end last rep kl instead of
sl 1.
Row 6 With C, k2, *sl 1 with yarn in front, kl; rep from *.

VEST
BACK: With smaller needles and A, cast on 109 (115,121) sts. Work in kl,
pl rib for 1¾". Change to larger needles and purl 1 row, inc 1 st at end
of row — 110 (116, 122) sts. Beg with Row 1, work in striped color patt until
piece measures 15½ (16, 16½)" from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape armhole: Cont in patt, bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 sts at
beg of next 2 rows — 96 (102, 108) sts. Dec 1 st each side every other row 4
times — 88 (94, 100) sts. Work even until armhole measures 10½ (11, 11½)",
end with a WS row.
Shape shoulders: Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts at beg of next 6 rows. Bind off rem
40 sts.
RIGHT FRONT: With smaller needles and A, cast on 55 (61, 67) sts. Work in k1, pl rib as for back. Change to larger needles and purl 1 row, inc 1st at end of row — 56 (62, 68) sts. Beg with row 1, work in striped color patt until piece measures 15½ (16, 16½)" from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape V-neck, armhole and shoulder:
Next row (RS) Dec 1 st, work in patt to end.
Next row (WS) Bind off 5 sts, work in patt to end. Shape armhole as for
back, AT SAME TIME, shape V-neck by dec 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row 23 times
more — 21(27, 33) sts. Work even until armhole measures same as back to
shoulder, end with a RS row. Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts at beg next 3 WS rows. Place
4 markers for buttons, the first 1½" from lower edge, the last 14
(14½, 15)" from lower edge and the rem 2 evenly spaced between.
LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond to right front, reversing all shaping.
Work buttonholes opposite each marker on a RS row as foll: Work in patt to last
5 sts, bind off 2 sts, work last 3 sts. On next row, cast on 2 sts over
bound-off sts of previous row.
FINISHING:
Sew right shoulders tog.
Neck band and front borders:
With RS facing, smaller needles and A, beg at lower edge of right front and
pick up and k 105 (107, 109) sts along center front, 34 sts along back neck.
Work 2 rows in kl, pl rib. Bind off in rib. With RS of left front facing,
smaller needles and A, beg at shoulder and pick up and k 105 (107, 109) sts
along center front. Work band as for right front. Sew left shoulders tog,
including ribbing. Sew on buttons.
Arm bands:
With RS facing, smaller needles and A, pick up and k 91 (93, 95) sts
evenly around armhole. Work 2 rows in kl p1 rib. Bind off in rib. In same way,
work rib around rem armhole. Sew side seams including arm bands.
