10 sts + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern with larger hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

FPHDC (front post half double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around the hdc post, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Skip stitch behind the FPHDC.
sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

With larger hook, ch 40.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across - 38 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, sk first hdc, FPHDC in each hdc across, end FPHDC in turning ch. Rep last row 6 times. Fasten off.

With smaller hook, join yarn with sl st in lower right corner of Neck Tie.
Row 1: Work 10 sc evenly spaced across short edge of Neck Tie.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Row 10: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc - 5 sc.

Vintage Neck Tie Reviewed by Durinda Dunncavin on 2013-01-18 ****
Hi I just finished this pattern. I love the way it came out. At first I thought there was a mistake due to using size P & N crochet hooks with Vanna's choice # 4 weight yarn but as I got going I loved it. The pattern was a little tricky for me. I had to really pay attention when it came to the leaf portion. I used a size I hook to do the finishing single crochet around the leaf & started all the way down to the base of the leaf. I might make the next one slightly shorter. I also think it could be modified to make a headband/ear warmer. If you have any ides on how to do that I am interested
