GAUGE:
18 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Pattern st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

As a first time knitting project, I did struggle for a few days getting it started, but once I got the hang of it, the scarf came together beautifully. I too, found the scarf a little too short, and have added additional stripes so that it comes slightly past my waist. I think other first time beginners might find this pattern a bit of a struggle, but worth the effort. A great pattern that hides mistakes well! :)
