GAUGE:

12 stitches = 4 in. [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) before felting. EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

BAG
Cast on 54 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 240 rows. Bind off.

HANDLES (make 2)
Cast on 10 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch for 140 rows. Bind off.

FINISHING
Fold Bag in half and sew side seams. Sew one Handle to front of Bag, one to back, with ends of Handles at side seams. Weave in ends.

FELTING
Place piece into a mesh laundry bag or zippered pillowcase. Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape.

Strap Bag Reviewed by Susan on 2008-12-22 ****
For my first felting project, it was great! I plan to move the straps in a bit, about an inch ...having them on the very ends makes the bag gap open. My bag is more wide than tall and I think that makes the difference.
