16 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Cast on 80 (100, 120) sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 15 (15 1/2, 16) in. (38 (39.5, 40.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Armhole
Bind off 5 (7, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows - 70 (86, 104) sts.
Continue until piece measures 9 (9 1/2, 10) in. (23 (24.5, 25.5) cm) from beg of armhole shaping.
Shape Shoulder
Bind off 7 (10, 12) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 8 (10, 14) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 26 (26, 28) sts.

Cast on 59 (69, 79) sts.
Row 1 (RS): K 8 (for facing), sl 1, k to end of row.
Row 2: Purl across.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 13 (13 1/2, 14) in. (33 (34.5, 35.5) cm) from beg, ending with a WS row.
Shape Collar

Next Row: K to 1 st before marker, inc 1 st in next st, sl marker, sl 1, sl marker, inc 1 st in next st, k to end of row - 63 (73, 83) sts.
Rep last 4 rows twice more, AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures same length as Back to armhole shaping, end with a RS row.
Shape Armhole
Bind off 5 (7, 8) sts at beg of next WS row.
Continue to work collar shaping until there are 12 sts before first marker, end with a WS row.

Continue to work as established working Dec Row every 2 rows until 45 (53, 61) sts remain. Continue until piece measures same length as Back to shoulder shaping, end with a RS row.

Shawl-Collared Cardigan on 2015-02-16 ****
I enjoyed knitting this pattern and I like the finished product. The rolled edges remind me of a roll neck sweater from J Crew that was my favorite while in college!
