GAUGE:
17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in K2, p2 Rib, slightly stretched. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

PATTERN STITCH
K2, p2 Rib (multiple of 4 + 2)
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.
HAT Cast on 86 sts. Work in k2, p2 Rib until piece measures 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning, end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS): K2, *p1, k1; rep from * to last 4 sts, p2tog, k2 – 85 sts at end of row.
Next Row (WS): P2, *k1, p1; rep from * to last 3 sts, k1, p2.
Next Row: K2, *p1, k1; rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, k2.
Next Row: P2 *k1, p1; rep from * to last 3 sts, k1, p2.
Rep last 2 rows 2 more times.
Shaping Row 1 (RS): K2, p2tog, k the knit sts and p the purl sts to last 4 sts, p2tog, k2 – 83 sts.
