12 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Baby Bear Hooded Jacket Reviewed by Carissa Campbell on 2013-04-02 ***
I had originally made this for my son. It was easy and cute, but the hood was way too long. Nobody else seemed to have this problem, but I made it 10" long, just as the pattern says. It looked long to me when I was making it but I thought since nobody who made it mentioned a problem, that it would be fine. When I put it on the baby the hood was way too big and he couldn't wear it. I am going to have to pull it out and make it shorter and give it as a gift instead.
