Lion Brand® Lion® Cotton - Cotton-Ease® (new)

GAUGE:

9 dc + 8 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] with 2 strands of yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

dc2tog (dc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st, and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTES:

  1. To change color, work last stitch to the point where there are 2 loops on hook, yarn over with new color to complete stitch.
  2. Always ch 3 at beg of every WS row, and ch 2 at beg of every RS row. This helps shape a slight curve, making it easier to coil the strip.
  3. Use 2 strands of yarn held tog throughout.

COLOR AND ROW SEQUENCE

Change colors in the following color sequence: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L.

At the same time, change colors in the following row sequence: 2 rows, 3 rows, 5 rows, 8 rows for a repeat of 18 rows.

RUG
With 2 strands of held tog, ch 3.
Row 1(RS): Dc in 3rd ch from hook.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn, dc in next dc; drop both strands of and change to 2 strands of B held tog – 2 dc.
Row 3 (RS): With B, ch 2 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn, dc in first dc (inc made), dc in next dc – 3 dc.
Row 4: Ch 3, turn, dc in first dc (inc made) and in each dc across – 4 dc.
Row 5: Ch 2, turn, dc in first dc and in each dc across; drop both strands of B and change to 2 strands of C held tog – 5 dc.
Row 6: With C, ch 3, turn, dc in first dc and in each dc across – 6 dc.
Row 7: Ch 2, turn, dc in first dc and in each dc across – 7 dc.
Rows 8 and 9: Rep Rows 6 and 7 – 9 dc.
Row 10: Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across; drop both strands of C and change to 2 strands of D held tog – 9 dc.
Rep Row 10 and continue in Color and Sequence until 18-row repeat has been worked 23 times. 10 and continue in Color and Sequence for 11 more rows, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Continue in Color and Sequence, ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across to last 2 sts, dc2tog – 8 sts.
Next Row (RS): Continue in Color and Row Sequence, ch 2, turn, dc2tog, dc in each dc across – 7 sts.
Rep last 2 rows until 1 st remains. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Working on a flat surface and starting at the beginning of Strip, coil Strip into a circle. Ch-2 edge should be on the inside of spiral and ch-3 should be along the outside edge. To ensure piece lays flat, do not pull Strip too tightly. Sew adjoining edges of Strip together as you work.

Edging

With 2 strands of yarn held tog and changing colors about every 13 rows of strip, join yarn along edge of Rug and work 1 row of reverse single crochet around the entire outside edge of Rug; join with slip stitch in first st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Downloadable Pattern: Shaker-Inspired Rug Reviewed by aimee reynolds on 2008-07-31 *****
i had a pattern very similar to this and used bread wrappers to make the rug. I've had the rug 20 years and it's still holding up well!
