17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in k2, p2 Rib, slightly stretched. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Stocking Cap Reviewed by Emily Avila on 2011-09-08 *****
I have made two of these. On in tan and one in red. They have been a huge success and everyone loves them.
I did use smaller needles to do the second hat because the tan one was just slightly too big and stretchy but luckily my husband has a big head LOL
