13 sts + 10 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

With larger needles, cast on 3 sts.
Row 1: Inc 1 in first st, knit to last st, inc 1 in last st – 5 sts.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: Inc 1 in first st, knit to last st, inc 1 in last st – 7 sts.
Rows 4-24: K 3, yo, knit to end of row – 28 sts at end of Row 24.
Rows 25 and 26: Cast on 14 sts, knit to end of row – 56 sts.
Rows 27 and 28: Knit.
Row 29: Bind off 14 sts at beginning of row, knit to end of row.
Row 30: Bind off 14 sts at beginning of row, knit to end of row – 28 sts.
Rows 31-42: K 2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, knit to end of row – 16 sts at end of Row 42.

Shape Head
Change to smaller needles.
Row 43: K2tog across row – 8 sts.
Row 44: Inc in each st across row – 16 sts.
Row 45: *Purl 1, slip 1 with yarn in back; repeat from * across row.
Note: Head is made using double knitting to create a double thickness of fabric that can be stuffed.

Repeat Row 45 until head measures 4 in. [10 cm]. Cut a 10 in. [25.5 cm] length of yarn. Thread yarn through every other st on needle, then back through remaining sts. Remove knitting needle and stuff head. Pull yarn tightly to close top of head and knot to secure.

EARS (make 2)
With larger needles, cast on 3 sts.
Row 1-3: Knit.
Row 4: Inc 1 in first st, k 1, inc 1 in last st – 5 sts.
Row 5-7: Knit.
Row 8: K 1, k3tog, k 1 – 3 sts.
Row 9-12: Knit.
Row 13: K3tog. Fasten off last st.

Sew Ears to sides of head. Work straight st face with black yarn. Weave in ends. Knot each paw.

This is a great pattern. The head is really neat. It is a double knit that makes a double sided pocket for the stuffing. It's simple. When the purl 1 slip 1 starts: Purl 1 and move your thread to the back, slip the next stich off as if you were going to knit, then move your thread back to the front, purl 1, move thread to the back, slip as if knitting. You should end the row with a slipped stitch. That stitch will be the first stitch of the next row and will start the Purl 1 slip 1 again.
