Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®
GAUGE:
10 stitches + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Cast on 17 stitches. Work in Garter stitch (knit every row) until piece measures 18 in. (46 cm)
from beginning. Bind off. Fold piece in half and sew back seam.
Finishing
Braid
Cast on 10 stitches. Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7: Slip 1, purl 9. Rows 2, 4 and 6: Slip 1, knit 9. Row 8: Slip 1, slip next 4 stitches to a cable needle and hold at back of work, knit next 4
stitches from left hand needle, knit 4 stitches from cable needle, knit 1.
Repeat Rows 1-8 until Braid measures about 90 in. (228.5 cm), end with Row 7.
Bind off. Mark center of Braid length and center front of Hat. Sew Braid along front edge of Hat,
matching marked centers, with equal lengths of Braid hanging free on each side.
Tassels
Cut 22 lengths of yarn, each 10 in. (25.5 cm). Pull 10 lengths through one end of Braid. Wrap a
length of yarn around Tassel, about 3/4 in. (2 cm) from top. Knot ends of wrapped length, then weave
through Tassel.
Repeat on other end of Braid with remaining lengths. Trim Tassel ends evenly.
I needed a gift idea and found this pattern to be fairly quick and very easy (started and finished in one day - about 9 hours total knitting time). I did make two changes: I used Hometown USA in Portland Wine (I needed a little less than 2.5 balls) and instead of all garter stitch, I did garter for two rows, then stockinette for two rows. I'm definitely going to make another for myself!
