GAUGE:

16 sts + 17 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Cable Pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Row 1 (RS):
K1, *p2, 3/3 LC, p2, k6, rep from * twice, p2, 3/3 LC, p2, k1.
Row 2 & all WS rows:
K1, *k2, p6, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, k1.
Rows 3, 5, & 9:
K1, *p2, k6, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Row 7:
K1, *p2, k6, p2, 3/3 LC, rep from * twice, p2, k6, p2, k1.
Row 11: Change color, k1, *p2, k6, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Row 12: Rep Row 2.

STITCH EXPLANATION
3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross)
Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle.

BACK
With A, cast on 60 sts.
Work Set-up Row.
With A, work Cable Pattern Rows 1-10.
*Change to B and work Cable Pattern Rows 11, 12, and 1-10. Rep from *, changing to C and then D. Transfer all sts to st holder.

FRONT
Work as for Back.

FINISHING
Sew side and bottom seams.

Handles
Transfer sts from first st holder onto needle. From WS with A, insert crochet hook through first purse Handle and draw up a loop. Bring yarn around Handle and draw a second loop through the first loop and through the first st on needle. Slip st off needle. Continue to work crochet wrap in this manner across remaining sts, then continue to work crochet wrap into ring Handle alone until ring is covered. Repeat for sts on other st holder and second ring Handle.

Weave in ends.

ALTERNATE FINISHING

To attach the handles using this alternate method, bind off the stitches of the Front and the Back instead of leaving the stitches on holders.
Handles
Notes:

1. The handles are attached to the Bag by using the crochet hook to draw a strand of yarn around the handle and then through the bound off stitches of the Bag. Once the Back or Front of the Bag is attached to a handle, continue to work the crochet wrap until the entire handle is covered with yarn.
2. When you work through the bound off stitches, don’t worry if you miss a stitch or two - just make sure that the handle is securely attached.
3. You do not need to be an experienced crocheter to work the crochet wrap. Just work slowly and carefully following the steps below, one at a time.
4. The crochet wrap is easy, but you may need to fiddle a little with how to hold the handle, Bag and hook all at the same time!
5. The handle is a ring; ABOVE the handle means the inner edge of the ring, BELOW the handle means the outside edge of the ring.

Attaching Handles
1. Knot the working strand of yarn (the yarn that is coming from your ball of yarn) very loosely onto one handle. Hold this handle and attached yarn strand in your left hand. Hold the Back in the same hand, in back of the handle. Keep the working yarn behind the Back.
2. With the crochet hook in your right hand, insert the hook BELOW the handle and through the first bound off stitch on the Back. Wrap the working yarn over the hook. Holding this loop of yarn on the hook, draw the hook back towards you, through the stitch and BELOW the handle.
3. You now have one loop on the hook.
4. Insert the hook ABOVE the handle, wrap the yarn over the hook and draw this loop of yarn through the loop on the hook, leaving one loop on the hook.
5. Insert the hook BELOW the handle, then through the next bound off stitch on the Back. Wrap the yarn over the hook (just as in Step 2) and draw this loop of yarn through the stitch. You now have 2 loops on the hook.
6. Insert the hook ABOVE the handle, wrap the yarn over the hook and draw this loop of yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, leaving one loop on the hook.
7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all of the bound off stitches have been joined to the handle. You will be left with one loop on the hook.
8. Insert the hook BELOW the handle (as in Step 4), wrap the yarn over the hook and, holding the yarn in place, draw the hook back towards you. You now have 2 loops on the hook.
9. Repeat Step 6.
10. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 until the entire handle is wrapped with yarn.
11. Cut the yarn, leaving a 6 in. (15 cm) yarn tail. Thread the tail into a blunt needle, then draw the needle under a few of the yarn wraps on the handle to conceal the tail. Trim the remaining end of the tail.
12. Attach the second handle to the Front in the same way.

Beginning about 2-3 in. (5-7.5 cm) below handles, sew Front and Back together along both sides.
Sew Front and Back together along lower edge.
Weave in ends.

Cable Ready Bag Reviewed by Candice Erickson on 2010-12-26 ***
The bag seems the right size to me. Instead of crocheting all around the handle, we just used a bamboo style. One issue is opening the bag. It's nearly impossible to open! Perhaps a straight handle would be better...? Otherwise very cute! Will also line with a cell phone pocket.
