10 FPHDC + 8 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] with larger hook.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

FPHDC (front post half double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around the hdc post, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Skip stitch behind the FPHDC.
sc2tog (sc dec)
Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

With larger hook, ch 40.
Row 1:
Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across – 38 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, sk first hdc, FPHDC in each hdc across, end FPHDC in turning ch. Repeat last row 6 times. Fasten off.

Shaped End

From RS, with smaller hook, join yarn with sl st in corner of one short end of Neck Tie.
Row 1: Work 10 sc evenly across short edge of Neck Tie.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sk first sc, * sc in next sc, sk next sc; repeat from * across, end sc in last sc – 5 sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog – 3 sc.

Form Slit
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc through front loop of each sc.
Rows 7 and 8: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Fasten off.
Turn scarf over and join yarn in first free loop of Row 6; sc through free loops of each of the 3 sc. Repeat Rows 7 and 8. Do not fasten off.
Row 9: Ch 1, turn, working through Row 8 of both thicknesses, sc in each sc across. Change to larger hook.
Row 10: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc – 5 sc.
Row 11: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc – 7 sc.
Rows 12-16: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Row 17: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sk next sc, sc in next sc, sk next sc, sc2tog – 3 sc.
Row 18: Ch 1, turn, sk first sc, sc2tog. Fasten off.
Worked shaped end in same way on opposite end of Neck Tie.

From RS, with smaller hook, join yarn with sl st and sc evenly around each shaped end.

Necktie Reviewed by Becky Thomas on 2010-02-01 ****
I made this using Lion Brand Wool, which is a medium weight yarn, using the hooks suggested in the pattern. It really turned out well. I'll definitely be making more!
