13 stitches across and 28 rows down = 4 in. [10 cm] in garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Cast on 33 stitches.
Work in Garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row) until piece measures 10 in. [25.5 cm]. Bind off all stitches.

FRONTS (make 2)
Cast on 17 stitches.
Work in Garter stitch until piece measures 10 in. [25.5 cm].
Bind off all stitches.

SLEEVES (make 2)
Cast on 26 stitches.
Work in garter stitch until piece measures 5 in. [12.5 cm]. Bind off all stitches.

Matching fronts to back, sew each shoulder seam from armhole edge towards center for 2.5 in. [6.5 cm], leaving remaining edges open. Place pins 4 in. [10cm] down from shoulder on front and back. Center sleeve between pins and sew to body. Sew side seams and Sleeve seams. Weave in ends.
At neck edge, fold corner down 2 in. [5 cm] and tack in place. Repeat on the other side. Cut ribbon length in half. Sew one half to each side of sweater front neck.

Baby's First Cardigan Reviewed by Michele Tanguay on 2015-08-25 *****
I love this pattern because it's great for a new sweater maker! I have one question does ANYONE know if this pattern can be use for an ADULT sweater if you change the sleeves by increasing the knit ( to shape the sleeve ) would the neck line come out ok? Or would this be too boxy !
