Make-a-Statement Hat

GAUGE:
9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st -1 st increased.
NOTES:
Hat and lining are made in one piece, then lining is folded to inside of Hat.
HAT
Cast on 6 sts. Row 1(RS): Kfb in each st across - 12 sts. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12: Purl. Row 3: *K1, kfb; rep from * across row - 18 sts. Row 5: *K2, kfb; rep from * across row - 24 sts. Row 7: *K3, kfb; rep from * across row - 30 sts. Row 9: *K4, kfb; rep from * across row - 36 sts. Row 11: *K5, kfb; rep from * across row - 42 sts. Row 13: *K6, kfb; rep from * across row - 48 sts. Next Row: *K1, p1; rep from * across row. Next Row (RS): K the knit sts, p the purl sts.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures about 18 in. (46 cm) from beginning, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means the last row you work should be a WS row, the next row you will work is a RS row. Shape Lining Row 1: *K6, k2tog, rep from * across row - 42 sts. Row 2 and all WS Rows: Knit. Row 3: *K5, k2tog, rep from * across row - 36 sts. Row 5: *K4, k2tog, rep from * across row - 30 sts. Row 7: *K3, k2tog, rep from * across row - 24 sts. Row 9: *K2, k2tog, rep from * across row - 18 sts. Row 11: *K1, k2tog, rep from * across row - 12 sts. Row 13: *K2tog, rep from * across row - 6 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, pull tightly tog, and fasten off.
FINISHING
Sew seam. Fold lining to inside of Hat. Sew Hat and lining tog at crown. Weave in ends.

a great warm double thick hat BUT you must make it MUCH longer between beginning/ending in order to fold the brim as it is folded in the picture otherwise, you have a cloche type hat, still attractibe without the brim
