If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Ruffled Stole Reviewed by Rebecca Engel on 2009-09-02 ****
This was very quick and easy to make up. However, I found I did not like the appearance of the ruffle or the unfinished appearance of the long edges. Instead of the ruffle, I crocheted three rows of single crochet on the short end, then single crocheted along the long edge, and repeated that for the other short and long edges. I also thought the stole was a little too narrow. I made a second one, working the pattern stitch this time across the length of the stole so I could make it the depth I preferred. For that one I not only edged it in single crochet but also with a shrimp stitch which gave the stole more substance.
