GAUGE:

7 sts (2¼ V-sts) = 3 in. [7.5 cm] in V-st pattern.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

  • V-st pattern (multiple of 3)
    Ch a multiple of 3 + 6 extra.
    Row 1:
    Working in 6th ch from hook, * (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st -- V-st made, sk 2 ch, rep from *, dc in last st. Turn.
    Row 2:
    Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work Vst in ch-1 sp of each V-st in previous row, dc in 3rd ch of beg-ch. Turn each row.
    Rep Row 2 for V-st pattern.
  • V-st dec (Yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) in next V-st, (yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) in top of ch 3, yo, draw through all lps on hook.
  • dc2tog (dc dec) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a lp, yarn over and draw through 2 lps. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a lp. Yarn over, draw through 2 lps, yarn over and draw through all lps on hook.

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing shaping.

SLEEVE
Ch 21.
Row 1:
Work Row 1 of V-st pattern across -- 5 V-sts with dc as first and last st. Rep Row 2 of V-st pattern and, AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 dc each edge every row and work new sts into V-st pattern until there are 9 (11, 13) V-sts with dc as first and last st. Work 17 rows total or until piece measures 18 in. [46 cm] from beg. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Sleeve Edging
From RS, join yarn at wrist edge of Sleeve.
Row 1:
Work 17 sc evenly spaced along opposite edge of beg-ch. Turn.
Row 2
: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Fasten off. Sew Sleeves to Back and Fronts along raglan edge. Sew side and Sleeve seams.

Coat Edging
From RS, join yarn to lower left Front edge. Sc evenly along lower edge of Coat. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Fasten off

Front Band/Collar
Ch 11.
Row 1:
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across -- 10 sts. Turn.
Row 2:
Ch 1, sc in BACK LP ONLY of each st. Turn each row. Rep Row 2 until piece measures 52 (54, 54) in. [132 (137, 137) cm] or until Bands/Collar fits along Left Front edge, around Back neck, and along Right Front Edge. Fasten off. Sew Bands/Collar in place.

BELT (optional)
Ch 4.
Row 1:
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across -- 3 sc. Turn.
Row 2:
Ch 1, sc in BACK LP ONLY of each sc. Turn each row. Rep Row 2 until belt measures 60 in. [152.5 cm] or desired length. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

I was really, really disgusted by the finished item. The picture does not show just how bulky this sweater is! I am pretty petite and it still makes me look like the side of a house. Just be aware that the yarn is very thick. I made a belt, hoping to create a waist, but I only wound up looking like a fat pickle.
