GAUGE: 10 sts + 12 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st (k on right side, p on wrong side) with 2 strands of A, 1 strand of B, and 1 strand of C held tog.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Beginning at rear end of hedgehog, and leaving a long tail of each yarn,
cast on 20 sts using 2 strands of A, 1 strand of B, and 1 strand of C held tog.
Row 1 Inc 1, k 18, inc 1 – 22 sts.
Row 2 K 1, inc 1, k 18, inc 1, k 1 – 24 sts.
Row 3 K 1, inc 1, k 20, inc 1, k 1 – 26 sts.
Row 4 Drop 2 strands of A. K 5 with B and C only; pick up 2
strands of A and, working with 4 strands (2 of A, 1 strand each of B and C) held
tog, k 16, drop 2 strands of A and, with B and C only, k 5.
Row 5 P 5 with B and C only, pick up 2 strands of A and k 16 with 2 strands
of A and 1 strand each of B and C held tog, drop 2 strands of A, p 5 with B and
C.
Rows 6, 8 and 10 Rep Row 4.
Rows 7, 9 and 11 Rep Row 5.
Row 12 K 6 with B and C only, pick up 2 strands of A and k 14 with 2

Rows 13, 15, 17 and 19 P 7 with B and C held tog, pick up 2 strands of A
and k 12 with 2 strands of A and 1 strand each of B and C held tog, drop 2

Rows 14, 16 and 18 K 7 with B and C held tog, pick up 2 strands of A and

Row 20 With B and C held tog, k2tog, k 5, pick up 2 strands of A and,

Row 25 Cut both strands of A. Working with only B and C, purl.
Row 26 K2tog, k 10, k2tog – 12 sts.
Row 27 Cut strand of B. Working with C only, purl.
Row 28 K2tog, k 8, k2tog – 10 sts.
Row 29 Purl.
Row 30 K2tog, k 6, k2tog – 8 sts.
Row 31 Purl.
Row 32 K2tog 4 times – 4 sts. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.
FINISHING
Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle, thread through remaining sts and
gather tightly tog. Fasten off. Rep on cast on end of the Hedgehog. Sew seam,
leaving an opening for stuffing. Stuff with fiberfill and sew opening closed.
Weave in ends. Following photo, use brown embroidery thread to embroider nose
and blue embroidery thread to embroider eyes.

Using pattern, cut 4 feet from brown leather or felt. Cut slit where marked.
Sew feet through slit to underside of the Hedgehog. |
