Knit Hooded Ponchette

GAUGE: 15 sts + 24 rnds = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k every rnd) with A. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: | M1 (make 1 st) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop. |

PONCHETTE
 With A, cast on 176 sts. Knit back
and forth for 6 rows. Place marker and join, being careful not to twist. Change
to St st and work even until piece measures 5½ inches [14 cm] from beg.
Dec Rnd *K 9, k2tog; rep from * around – 160 sts. Work even until piece
measures 8½ inches [21.5 cm] from beg.
Dec Rnd *K 2, k2tog; rep from * around – 120 sts. Work even until piece
measures 11" [28 cm] from beg.
Dec Rnd *K 1, k2tog; rep from * around – 80 sts. Work even until piece
measures 12" [30.5 cm] from beg.
Dec Rnd *K 6, k2tog; rep from * around – 70 sts. Knit 1 rnd even.
HOOD
Inc Rnd *K 2, M1; rep from * around – 105 sts.
Next Rnd K 52, place marker, k 53. Work even, slipping markers, for 8"
[20.5 cm].
Shape Hood Back
Next Rnd Knit to first marker, k 34; turn.
Sl 1 as if to purl, p 14; turn.
Sl 1 as if to purl, k 15; turn.
Sl 1 as if to purl, p 16; turn.
Sl 1 as if to purl, k 17; turn.
Sl 1 as if to purl, p 18; turn.
Continue working back and forth in St st as established, moving 1 st closer
to the markers every row. When you reach the marker that begins the rnd, remove
the marker and knit tog the last sl st and the first st of the next rnd to
prevent a hole. Replace marker.
TRIM
Cut A and change to 2 strands of B held tog. Knit to 1 st before next
marker. Remove marker and knit tog the sts before and after the marker to
prevent a hole. Continue in St st for 2½ inches [6.5 cm]; end at marker. Bind
off all sts very loosely (if desired, use a needle
1 or 2 sizes larger to bind off). Weave in ends. |
