Easy to knit and a delight to wear, the new knitted criss-cross shrug is versatile, hip and flattering too! This simple and stylish shrug is a long rectangle, with a seamed ‘sleeve’ at each end. It can be wrapped and draped in several different ways (see images and descriptions below) Optional fringe on the sleeves gives a splash of color.

GAUGE:
8 sts + 8 rows = 4” [10cm] in Garter st (k every row) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
SHRUG
With 2 strands A held together, cast on 24 sts. Work even in Garter st until
wrap measures 75 (80) inches [190.5 (203)cm] from beg. Bind off.
Finishing Fold wrap in half lengthwise. Sew 18.5 inch underarm seams, beg at cast-on
and bind-off edges. Weave in ends.
Cut strands from yarns B, C and D approximately 4-7 inches [10-18cm] long.
For each fringe, fold one length (does not have to be even). Insert crochet hook
to WS and back to RS through a stitch in fabric and draw fold through, forming a
loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Attach fringes
randomly over lower 4.5 inches [11.5cm] of each sleeve (or as desired).
Wearing Suggestions:
To wear, slide one of your arms into one of the sleeves, wind the remaining length of the rectangle around your body (thus crossing it), then slide your remaining arm into the remaining sleeve. The winding is done in the same manner as you would wind a long scarf around your neck.
Wear the shrug with the crisscross wrap in front. -- wrap the
shrug under the arm, and then over your shoulder in front.
Wear the shrug with the crisscross in back. The shrug will wrap straight across the front (see images and descriptions below for detail)
With the crisscross in back, the shrug can be loosely
gathered in front like a scarf
With the crisscross in back, the shrug can worn with a
shawl-style drape in the front.

I left off the fringe as well. Since I could not get the hang of arranging the criscross, I wove elastic along one edge between the sleeve seams. It makes a lovely cape effect. Next time I will shorten slightly for a less full cape.
