Playground Sweater and Hat

Lion Brand® Landscapes®(old)

12 sts = 4 in. [10 cm] in garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Cast on 32 (34, 36) sts. Work in garter st until piece measures 4 (4½, 5) in. [10 (11.5, 12.5) cm] from beg; end with a WS row.

Shape Sleeves
Inc Row (RS)
K 1, inc in next st, k to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k 1 – 34 (36, 38) sts.
Next Row (WS) Knit.
Rep last 2 rows 14 more times – 62 (64, 66) sts.

Shape Cuffs
Cast on 6 sts at end of next 2 rows – 74 (76, 78) sts. Work even in garter st for 3 in. [7.5 cm], end with a WS row.

Shape Back Neck
Next Row
K 29 (30, 31) and slip these sts to a holder for Right Front, bind off next 16 sts for Back Neck, knit remaining sts for Left Front.

Shape Left Front
Continue on 29 (30, 31) sts for Left Front, working 4 rows in garter st.
Inc Row (WS) K to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k 1 – 30 (31, 32) sts.
Work 1 row even.
Rep last 2 rows 2 more times – 32 (33, 34) sts.
Next Row (WS)
Knit to end of row, cast on 2 sts – 34 (35, 36) sts.
Work 1 row even.
Next Row (WS) Knit to end of row, cast on 6 sts – 40 (41, 42) sts.
Work even until Cuff measures 6 in. [15 cm], end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS) Bind off 6 sts, knit to end of row – 34 (35, 36) sts.
Work 1 row even.
Dec Row (WS) K2tog, knit to end of row – 33 (34, 35) sts.
Work 1 row even.
Rep last 2 rows 14 more times – 19 (20, 21) sts.
Work even until Left Front measures same as Back. Bind off all sts.

Place Buttons
Evenly space buttons along Left Front edge and sew in place.

Shape Right Front
Place 29 (30, 31) sts from holder onto needle; join yarn at neck edge. Work as for Left Front, reversing shaping; AT SAME TIME, work 5 buttonholes opposite buttons as follows: Buttonhole Row (RS) Knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, yo, k 2.

Sew side and Sleeve seams. Weave in ends. Fold back Cuffs.

Cast on 48 (52, 56) sts. Work in Garter st until piece measures 6½ in. [16.5 cm] from beg.
Next Row (Dec Row) K2tog across row – 24 (26, 28) sts.
Work 1 row even.
Rep Dec Row once more – 12 (13, 14) sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle and thread through remaining sts; pull tightly to secure. Sew seam. Weave in ends.
