12 sc = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sc2tog (sc 2 together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

Leg of stocking is a rectangle, crocheted side to side, then joined into a tube with a sc seam that runs along the front of the stocking and helps give it a "boot" shape. A slit forms the heel opening. Contrasting heel, toe, cuff and hanging loop are added later.

Front Leg, First Section

With A, ch 41.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 40 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across.
Rows 3-12: Rep Row 2.
Back Leg
Row 13: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, sc in each of next 26 sts, leave last 13 sts unworked – 27 sts.
Rows 14-36: Ch 1, turn. Sc across 27 sts. Fasten off.

Join A in first unworked st following back leg sts. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each of next 12 sts – 13 sts.
Working back and forth on these 13 sts only, work even in sc until piece is same length as back leg. End last row with sl st into Back Leg to join slit. Fasten off.

Front of Leg, Second Section
Row 37: Join A with sl st at end of back leg. Ch 1, sc in each of 27 sts of back leg, sc in each of 13 sts of foot – 40 sts.
Rows 38-48: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across.
At end of Row 48, do not fasten off.
Join Front
Hold Row 48 tog with spare loops of base ch, matching sts.
Ch 1; working through both thicknesses, sc in next 25 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc remaining 11 sts. Fasten off.
Joining is meant to show on the outside of the Stocking and now becomes the RS.

With RS facing, join B in sc row edge at heel opening (slit).
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same place. Work 29 sc evenly spaced around opening, join with sl st in beg sc – 30 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, turn. Skip sl st, (sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog) 6 times – 24 sts. Place marker and continue in rounds.
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog) 6 times – 18 sts.
Rnd 5: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 6: (Sc in next st, sc2tog) 6 times – 12 sts.
Rnd 7: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 8: (Sc2tog) 6 times. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Thread tail onto blunt needle and weave through sts of Rnd 8, pull up gently to close hole. Fasten off.
With RS facing, join B with sl st in sc row edge at Front Join of Toe opening.
Work as for heel.

Cuff and Hanging Loop
With RS facing, join B with sl st in sc row edge at Front Join of top of Stocking.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same place. Work 17 sc evenly across top edge to back of Stocking. For hanging loop, ch 15, sl st in top of sc at base of ch. Work 18 sc evenly across other half of top edge – 36 sts. Place marker and continue in rnds.
Rnd 2: Keeping loop to back of work (inside of Stocking), (sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6 times – 42 sts.
Rnds 3-12: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off.

Turn cuff to outside of Stocking. Weave in ends.
