GAUGE:

12 sts + 16 rows = 4” (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Double increase (DI) K 1, insert left needle into row below in back of stitch just knit, knit this additional stitch, insert right needle into row below in back of next stitch on left needle and knit this new stitch, knit the stitch on left needle. Two new stitches have been added between the two existing knit stitches.

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

NOTES:

Capelet is cast on at the bottom edge and worked back and forth on a circular needle up to the neck. The center front seam is sewn leaving the collar open. When changing colors, leave a long tail for sewing front seam.

Knitted Posh Ponchette Reviewed by Carla Gillespie on 2014-01-05 ***
Because I was making this for a child,I used size 10 needles and a worsted weight. It turned out only 45 inches at cast on and 16 inches long and I'll probably use it for a younger child. I like the photo; this appears to be exactly what I've been seeking but I had to rip out the project three times and start over, realizing that the pattern has errors. I was determined to figure it out and get it done, though.
I corrected this by casting on 192 stitches and using markers (helpful for ripples) every 19 stitches to accommodate the repeats (rows 1,3,5 have a 19 st repeat). Row 8 needs purl 15 between the p2tog. Row 18 needs p13 between the p2tog; row 28 needs p11 between the p2tog; row 38 needs p9 between the p2tog; row 48 needs p7 between the p2tog; row 58 needs p5 between p2tog and row 68 needs p3 between the p2tog. Finally at the "dec for collar" row, I changed it to K1, p1 2 times, k2tog, (p1, k1) 2 times, [p2tog, (k1, p1) 2 times, k2tog, p1, k1] 4 times, p1, k1.
I hope this helps others.
