Knit Ideal Icelandic Sweater

Lion Brand® Color Waves - Homespun® - Fun Fur®

GAUGE:

14 sts + 17 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k every rnd) with MC on larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Grafting
Holding the 2 needles parallel with wrong sides of fabric together, thread a large-eyed, blunt needle with one of the yarn ends and work as follows:

Insert needle as if to purl into first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into first stitch on back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below. 1) Insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle. 2) Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on the needle. 3) Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle, then 4) insert it as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle. Repeat steps 1-4 until all sts are gone. When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.

NOTES:

The Body and Sleeves are knit separately in the round to the underarms, then joined together for the Yoke and knit to the neck.

BODY

Using smaller needles and MC, cast on 132 (146, 160, 174, 186) sts. Join, being careful not to twist, and place marker (pm) for beg of rnd. Purl 1 rnd, *knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd; repeat from * 2 more times. Change to larger needles and work in St st until piece measures 12 (12½, 13, 13½, 14)” from beg, or desired length to underarm. Work to 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts before marker. Don’t break yarn; set piece aside.

SLEEVES
Using smaller dpn and 1 strand each of D and E held tog, cast on 26 (29, 32, 35, 37) sts. Join, being careful not to twist, and pm for beg of rnd. Purl 3 rnds, *knit 3 rnds, purl 3 rnds; repeat from * 2 more times. Change to larger dpns and MC (changing to circular needle as soon as sts will fit comfortably around), and working in St st, inc 1 st each side of marker every 3 rnds 0 (0, 0, 0, 2) times, every 4 rnds 0 (4, 13, 13, 12) times, and every 5 rnds 10 (7, 0, 0, 0) times – 46 (51, 58, 61, 65) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 17 (17, 17½, 17½, 17½)” or desired length. On last row, work to 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts before marker and slip next 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) sts to holder. Break yarn.

YOKE

Join Sleeves to Body: Slip next 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) sts of Body to holder and, using MC and larger needle, k 35 (39, 45, 47, 50) sts from Sleeve, k 55 (61, 67, 73, 78) sts from Body, slip next 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) Body sts to holder, k 35 (39, 45, 47, 50) sts from 2nd sleeve, then k remaining 55 (61, 67, 73, 78) sts of Body – 180 (200, 224, 240, 256) sts; pm. Knit 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) rows in MC, inc 0 (0, 1, 0, -1) sts on last row – 180 (200, 225, 240, 255) sts. Work in St st, following chart, decreasing as follows (changing to shorter needle when necessary): Dec Rnd 17 K 2, (k2tog, k 3) around to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1 – 144 (160, 180, 192, 204) sts.
Dec Rnd 27: (K2tog, k 2) around – 108 (120, 135, 144, 153) sts.
Dec Rnd 33 (K2tog, k 1): around – 72 (80, 90, 96, 102) sts.
Dec Rnd 39 (K 2, k2tog): around, ending k 0 (0, 2, 0, 2) – 54 (60, 68, 72, 77) sts.
Change to smaller 16” needle and, with 1 strand each of D and E held tog, k 6 rnds. Bind off very loosely.

FINISHING

Graft Body and Sleeve underarm sts tog. Weave in ends.

Downloadable Pattern: Knit Ideal Icelandic Sweater Reviewed by Sue Berneman on 2010-01-15 ****
I love this sweater! I did change up the colors and had fun with it. The first one was so great that I made a second one and substituted out the fun fur and kept going with the homespun and doing a k1,p1 for wrists and neck. I'm almost done with my 3rd sweater in less than 2 months! (All this and I work full time so it's just evening knitting!)
