specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
sc2tog (sc dec): Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook
sc3tog (sc dec): Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and following st, drawing up a loop in each. Yarn over, draw through all 4 loops on hook.
When increasing, the work even rows are on wrong side.
When decreasing, the work even rows are on right side.
SQUARE I -Make 3
Increase Shaping With A, ch 2.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook 1 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Work 3 sc in one sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Work 2 sc in first st, work 1 sc, work 2 sc in last st 5 sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Work even.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, 2 sc in next st; work to last 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in last st 7 sc.
Rows 6 and 7: Repeat Row 5 11 sc.
Row 8: Repeat Row 4.
Rows 9 and 10: With B, repeat Rows 5 and 6 15 sc.
Rows 11 16: With C, repeat Rows 7, 8, 5, 6, 7 and 8 23 sc.
Rows 17 and 18: With B, repeat Rows 5 and 6 27 sc.
Rows 19 -24: With D, repeat Rows 7, 8, 5, 6, 7 and 8 35 sc.
Rows 25 and 26: With B, repeat Rows 5 and 6 39 sc.
Row 27: With E, repeat Row 7 41 sc.
Rows 28: 30 Continuing with E only, ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, work to within last 2 sts, sc2tog,
Row 31: Work even.
Repeat Rows 28 31 until 5 sts remain, ending with Row 30. Next Row Sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog 3 sc. Last Row Sc3tog. Fasten off.
Edging for Each Square. With right side facing, attach B in any corner; (work 25 sc evenly spaced across, 3 sc in corner) 4 times. Join to beginning sc with slip st. Fasten off. Using B, sew squares tog invisibly as per diagram below.
