16 sts + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles with MC, A or B.18 sts + 22 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on larger needles with CC. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Russian Hat Reviewed by Honey Dew Moon on 2013-06-18 *****
I received this hat in a knitting challenge to make the craziest hat. Hint to people who say its to big. I put a paper cone in the top part, fit fine then. I sent a bunch of fun fur in golds silver and white to the trade person I had. We were supposed to trade crazy yarn and the recipient was to make a hat and keep it, taking and posting a picture with it on. My person did so then sent the hat back to me. I love it! But I don't dare wear it around here! I did wear it a few places dressed up, and everyone had a huge reaction between love it and what the heck? Its too big though. I wore it for Halloween also, It needs a fancy dress and coat to go with it really. Wish I had more fun fur! I also sent fancy buttons and medallions in gold and gold ribbon. She wrapped the brim in the ribbon and glued the buttons and medallions onto the brim ribbon. It looked real cute.
