GAUGE:

Each square measures 3½inches (9 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Beginning Popcorn (bpc) Ch 3, 3 dc in same st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of ch 3, place dropped loop on hook, pull through. Popcorn (pc) 4 dc in same stitch, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of first dc of group, place dropped loop on hook, pull through. Cluster (cl) *Yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook, repeat from * twice more, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook. Puff Stitch (ps) *Yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up loop even with loop on hook, repeat from * 2 more times, yo and draw through all 7 loops. Triple Triple Crochet (tr tr) Yo 4 times, insert hook in st, yo and pull up loop, (yo and pull through 2 loops) 5 times.

SQUARE 1A (make 3)
With B, ch 8, join with slip st to form ring.
Rnd 1 (RS) Ch 4 – counts as dc + ch 1, (dc in ring, ch 1) 15 times; join with slip st to first dc – 16 dc, 16 ch1s.
Rnd 2 (RS) Slip st in first ch-space, work bpc, (ch 1, pc in next ch1-space) 3 times, ch 3, * pc in next ch1-space, (ch 1, pc in next ch1-space) 3 times, ch 3; repeat from * 2 more times, join with slip st to top of bpc – 16 pc, 16 spaces. Fasten off.
Rnd 3 (RS) Join A with slip st in any ch3-space, ch 3, (3 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in same space, ch 1, (dc in next ch1-space, ch 1) 3 times, * (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next ch3-space, ch 1, (dc in next ch1-space, ch 1) 3 times, repeat from * 2 more times; join with slip st to top of ch3. Fasten off.

SQUARE 2A (make 3)
With C, ch 6; join with slip st to form ring.
Rnd 1 (RS) Pull up 1½" loop, (work ps in ring, ch 1) 8 times; join with slip st in top of first ps. Fasten off.
Rnd 2 (RS) Join A with slip st in any ch1-space, pull up ½" loop, (work ps, ch 2) twice in same space and in each ch1-space around; join with slip st to top of first ps. Fasten off.
Rnd 3 (RS) With B, join with slip st in any ch2-space, ch 3, dc in same space, ch 1, (2 hdc in next ch2-space, ch 1) 3 times * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch2-space, ch 1, (2 hdc in next ch2-space, ch 1) 3 times, repeat from * 2 more times, 2 dc in same space as first dc, ch 2, slip st to top of ch3.

Row 3 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc; ch 1, turn – 5 sc.
Row 4 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc; ch 1, turn – 7 sc.
Row 5 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in last sc, changing to C at end of row; ch 1, turn – 9 sc.

Whip stitch squares tog according to diagram. Border With C and RS facing, work 1 row sc evenly around outer edge of scarf, with 3 sc in each corner and making sure both short ends have odd number of sc along each. Fasten off.

Fringe With RS facing, join C with slip st to center sc of corner 3 sc, working across short side (ch 75, slip st in same sc and next 2 sc), across, ending with slip st in 2nd sc of corner sc, ch 75, slip st in same sc. Fasten off. Repeat for other short side.
