Knit Slimline Vest

GAUGE:

17 sts + 22 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

NOTES:

When working in Garter st, slip the first st for a smoother edge.


BACK


Cast on 86 (94, 102, 110, 120, 128) sts. Work 7 rows in Garter st (k every row). Continue in St st only, keeping 4 st Garter st border on each side for side slits.
Next row (WS): K4 (garter st) P to last 4 sts, k4 (garter st).
Next row (RS): Slip 1 st, k to end. Work even until 40 rows have been completed.
Dec row (RS): K 1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k1. Repeat dec row every 20th row 3 more times – 78 (86, 94, 102, 112, 120) sts. Work even until piece measures 20½ (20, 20, 19½, 19½, 19)" from beg, ending with a WS row.
Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 (4, 5, 5, 6, 7) sts at beg of next row.
Next row (WS): Bind off 3 (4, 5, 5, 6, 7), p to last 4 sts, k 4.
Dec row (RS): Slip 1 st, k3 (garter st), k2tog, knit to last 6 sts, ssk, k4 (garter st).


Repeat dec row every RS row 8 (9, 10, 13, 15, 16) more times – 54 (58, 62, 64, 68, 72) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9, 9½)", ending with a RS row.
Next row (WS): K4 (garter st), p 5 (7, 9, 10, 11, 12), work 36 (36, 36, 36, 38, 40) sts garter st, p 5 (7, 9, 10, 11, 12), k4 (garter st). Work even until armhole measures 8 (8½, 9, 9½, 10, 10½)", ending with a WS row. Shape Shoulder and Back Neck Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) sts, k 8 (10, 11, 12, 12, 13), join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 28 (28, 28, 28, 30, 32), work to end of row. Working both sides with separate balls of yarn, bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beg of next row, then 4 (5, 6, 6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6) sts at beg of next row.


LEFT FRONT


Cast on 46 (50, 54, 59, 64, 68) sts. Work 7 rows in Garter st.
Next Row (WS): Work 4 sts in Garter st, St st to last 4 sts, 4 Garter sts. Work even until 40 rows have been completed.
Dec Row (RS): K 1, k2tog, St st to last 4 sts, work 4 Garter sts for placket.
Repeat dec row every 20th row 3 more times – 42 (46, 50, 55, 60, 64) sts. Work even until piece measures 19½ (19, 19, 18½, 18½, 18)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Place marker at neck edge.
Shape V-Neck Work to last 6 sts, ssk, work 4 Garter sts. Repeat dec at neck edge every 3rd row 16 (16, 16, 16, 17, 19) more times. AT SAME TIME, when piece measures 20½ (20, 20, 19½, 19½, 19)" from beg, ending with a WS row, shape armhole.
Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 (4, 5, 5, 6, 7) sts, work to end of row. Next Row (WS): Work to last 4 sts, k 4. Dec Row (RS) Slip 1 st, work 3 Garter sts, k2tog, work to end. Repeat dec at armhole edge 8 (9, 10, 13, 15, 16) more times. Cont as established, including V-neck shaping, until armhole measures 8 (8½, 9, 9½, 10, 10½)", ending with a WS row.
Shape Shoulder: Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) sts, work to end; bind off 4 (5, 6, 6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next RS row; then bind off 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6) sts at beg of next RS row. Place markers for 3 buttonholes as follows: first button 24 rows below beg of V-neck shaping, 2nd button 12 rows below first button, and 3rd button 12 rows below 2nd button


RIGHT FRONT


Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing shaping. Make buttonholes opposite markers on RS rows by slip 1, k2tog, yo, k across row.


FINISHING


Sew shoulders together. Sew side seams, leaving 6 1/2" at bottom open for side slits. Weave in ends. Sew on buttons.
