First-Cable Afghan

Lion Brand® Homespun®

8 sts + 12 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with yarn doubled. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Seed Stitch (multiple of 2 + 1)
Row 1
*K 1, p 1; repeat from *, end k 1. Repeat Row 1 for pattern.

8 Stitch Cable (multiple of 8)
Rows 1, 3, 7, 9 and 11
(RS) K 8.
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 P 8.
Row 5 Slip 4 sts to cable needle, hold to back, k 4, k 4 from cable needle.
Repeat Rows 1-12 for pattern.

Yarn is used doubled throughout. This afghan is knit in 3 panels.

Editor’s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.

PANEL (Make 3)
With 2 strands of yarn held together, cast on 27 sts.
Row 1 (RS) Work 3 sts in Seed st, 8 st Cable pattern, 5 sts in Seed st, 8 st Cable pattern, 3 sts in Seed st. Work even in pattern until panel measures 54" from beginning or desired length. End with Row 4 of 8 st Cable pattern. Bind off loosely in pattern.

Sew panels together. Weave in ends. Cut 8" lengths for fringe. Use 5 strands for each fringe and attach close together (approximately 60 fringe sets per side).

First-Cable Afghan Reviewed by Jane Kamper on 2011-12-21 *****
I made this as a christmas gift for a family member. It was so easy and quick to make and the finished project is very elegant. The cables look beautiful in Homespun 'prairie'. I skipped the fringe and did a simple crochet edging around the blanket.
