15 sts + 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Slip st pattern on larger needle. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

3-Needle Bind Off With RS together, hold in one hand 2 needles with equal number of sts on each. With third needle, knit tog one st from each needle (1), *knit tog one st from each needle (2), pass first st worked over second to bind off (3), rep from * across to last st. Cut working yarn. Pull through last st.

Kimono is knit in one piece to armhole, working back and forth on circular knitting needle. Yarn not in use can be carried up edge of piece. In Slip st pattern, the first and last stitches of each row should be knit stitches in the color for that row. After the armhole bind-off, two CC sts may fall next to each other at the ends of Rows 3 and 4. The end stitches will be hidden later when the kimono is assembled.

Slip st (multiple of 2 + 1)
Row 1 (RS): With MC, knit.
Row 2: With MC, knit.
Row 3: With CC, k 1, *slip 1 as if to purl wyib; k 1; rep from *.
Row 4: With CC, k 1; *slip 1 as if to purl wyif; k 1; rep from *.
Repeat Rows 1-4 for pattern.

With larger needle and MC, cast on 145 (167, 189, 211) sts. Change to smaller needle and work in Garter st (k every row) for 2". Change to larger needle and work even in Slip st pattern until piece measures 20 (21, 22, 22)" from beg or desired length to underarm, ending with Row 4 of Slip st pattern. Next Row K 24 (30, 34, 40) Right Front sts; bind off 12 (12, 14, 14); k 73 (83, 89, 99) Back sts; bind off 12 (12, 14, 14); k 24 (30, 34, 40) Left Front sts. Place Right Front sts and Back sts on separate holders.

Work even in pattern for 2 (2, 1, 1)", ending with pattern Row 1. Shape Front Neck Bind off 1 st at beg of next row. Cont to bind off 1 st at beg of every Row 2 of Slip st pattern until 14 (17, 19, 23) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures 10 (11, 11½, 12)", ending with Row 2 of Slip st pattern. Place sts on holder.

Attach MC at Right Front underarm. Work as for Left Front, reversing shaping. (Bind off for neckline shaping at beg of Row 1 of Slip st pattern).

With WS facing, attach MC at left underarm of Back and work Row 2 of Slip st pattern. Change to CC and work even in pattern until armhole measures 10 (11, 11½, 12)", ending with Row 1 of Slip st pattern. Next Row K 14 (17, 19, 23) sts, bind off 45 (49, 51, 53) sts for Back neck, k 14 (17, 19, 23) sts. Place shoulder sts on holders.

With larger needle and MC, cast on 77 (83, 87, 90) sts. Change to smaller needle and work in Garter st for 2¾", ending with a WS row. Work 2 rows Garter st in CC, then 2 more rows in MC. Change to larger needle and Slip st pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 11½ (12, 12½, 13)" from beg, ending with Row 2 of pattern. Change to smaller needle and work 2 rows Garter st in MC, 2 rows in CC, then 2 more rows in MC. Bind off.

Join Back to Fronts at shoulders with 3-Needle Bind Off. Sew in sleeves. (Note When sewing, place the seam 1 stitch in from the edges of both the sleeves and the armholes. This will guarantee an even ridge of MC at the top of each sleeve and will hide any colored stitches at the ends of the armhole rows.) Sew sleeve seams.

With RS facing, smaller needle and MC, beg at lower edge of Right Front pick up 80 (82, 82, 82) sts along straight edge, 34 (36, 38, 40) sts along Right Front neck edge, 45 (49, 51, 53) sts on Back neck, 34 (36, 38, 40) sts along Left Front neck edge, and 80 (82, 82, 82) sts along straight edge of Left Front – 271 (285, 291, 297) sts. Turn.
Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Rows 2-3: With CC, knit.
Row 4: With MC, k 111 (116, 118, 120) sts, k2tog, k 45 (49, 51, 53) sts, k2tog, k to end of row – 269 (283, 289, 295) sts.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: K 108 (113, 115, 117) sts, k2tog, k 5, k2tog, k 35 (39, 41, 43), k2tog, k 5, k2tog, k to end of row – 265 (279, 285, 291) sts. Cont in Garter st, decreasing 2 sts at curves of neckline only, on every RS row, until band measures 3” from beginning, ending at end of RS row. (Note Decrease on different but balanced pairs of stitches on each RS row; this will make the decreases more random and difficult to see.)
Change to larger needle and bind off to shoulder seam. Change to smaller needle and bind off Back neckline edge. At next shoulder seam, change to larger needle and finish binding off.

Knit Kimono Cardigan Reviewed by Helen Ashenfelter on 2013-11-14 **
Love the feel of this. BUT the neck on mine doesn't work right. It is too large. I redid it making it smaller but too much material to begin with so...I added a belt. I used 2 contrasting colors which really shows off the pattern.
