GAUGE:

19 sts + 32 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row) on smaller needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1 st): An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
dbl dec (double dec) (sk2p): Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over 2 sts decreased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit):
Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

NOTES:

Body is worked in one piece to underarm.

Knit Perfect Baby Gift Set Reviewed by Denise Carlascio on 2012-05-28 ****
I made this sweater, hat and bootie set, PLUS the Tree of Life baby throw all with one ball of pound of love yarn.
I would make the sweater about 2" longer from the bottom edge to the bottom of the armhole. But I was able to block it and lengthen it a bit.
