14 sts + 26 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

3-Needle Bind Off: With RS together, hold in one hand 2 needles with equal number of sts on each. With third needle, knit tog one st from each needle, *knit tog one st from each needle, pass first st worked over second to bind off, rep from * across to last st. Cut working yarn and pull through last st to secure.

Cast on 70 (78, 84, 92, 98) sts. Work in Garter st for 4" or desired length of side slit. To create a selvedge to aid in sewing side seams, cast on 1 st at end of next 2 rows – 72 (80, 86, 94, 100) sts. Work even until piece measures 13½ (14, 14½, 15, 16)".
Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 (8, 9, 10, 11) sts at beg of next two rows – 56 (64, 68, 74, 78) sts. Work even until armholes measure 8½ (9, 9½, 10, 11)" or desired length, ending with a WS row. Place all sts on a holder.

Cast on 35 (39, 42, 46, 49) sts. Work in Garter st for 4" or desired length of side slit. Cast on 1 st at side seam edge for selvedge – 36 (40, 43, 47, 50) sts. Work even until Front measures 13½ (14, 14½, 15, 16)". At armhole edge, bind off 8 (8, 9, 10, 11) sts – 28 (32, 34, 37, 39) sts. Beg next row, bind off 1 st every 4th row at center front 11 (13, 13, 14, 14) times – 17 (19, 21, 23, 25) sts. Work even until armhole measures same as Back, ending with a WS row. Place remaining sts on holder.

Work as for Left Front, reversing shaping

Cast on 28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts. Inc 1 st each edge every 8th row 10 (10, 10, 6, 1) time(s) – 48 (50, 52, 46, 38) sts. Then inc 1 st each edge every 6th row 5 (5, 6, 11, 18) times – 58 (60, 64, 68, 74) sts. (Note Inc one st in from the edge to make an even selvedge that will be easy to sew later.) Work even until sleeve measures 19 (19½, 19½, 20, 20)" or desired length. Bind off.

Cast on 28 (30, 30, 32, 32) sts. Work in Garter st for 7". Bind off.

Join Back to Fronts at shoulders using 3-Needle Bind Off. Sew tops of sleeves to armholes. Each sleeve st will correspond to 2 rows (1 ridge) on body, with 1 st each edge of sleeve remaining as selvedge to aid in sewing side seams. Sew side edges of upper sleeve to the bound-off edges at lower armholes. Sew sleeve seams and body side seams above slits.

Mark Right Front for placement of 5 buttonholes. Beginning at lower edge of Right Front, RS facing, pick up 1 st in each Garter ridge; at location of each buttonhole, cast on 1 st and skip a ridge when picking up. (This creates a small buttonhole.) At back of neck, place remaining 22 (26, 26, 28, 28) sts on spare needle and knit across to left shoulder seam. Continue picking up sts on Left Front to correspond with Right Front, eliminating buttonholes. Work band back and forth in Garter st for 3 more rows. Bind off loosely. Reinforce reverse side of buttonholes if desired. Sew on buttons. Sew pockets to lower Fronts.
